Continuing south-west for 8 km from Polistena, on the road 241, there is
Cittanova (420mt a.s.l.). The birth of this agricultural centre was on the
12th August 1618 with the proclamation of edification of the “New Casale di
Curtuladi”. The town presents an urban plan made from a part that was reinforced
after an earthquake of 1616 and from another section developed after the
earthquake of 1783. the historical centre holds monuments of great importance,
like various 700/800 palaces: Terranova Bagnato palace. Cannatà palace, Zito
palace, castellano palace.
The main church, that is constructed after the earthquake of 1783 by Maria
Antonia Grimaldi, daughter and heir of the deceased Princess of Gerace, Maria
Teresa, who died under the rubbles of the earthquake. It presents late baroque
shapes on the base of an elaborated work project by the Morano brothers,
architects from Polistena. The great bell, fused in 1819, carries the image of
S.Girolamo, saint of the city, and the wooden statue of the Saint is a work by
the sculptor Domenico De lorenzo (1742-1812), also author the Resurrected Christ
statue. The church also keeps statues that represent the different phases of the
Passion of Jesus Christ and some operas by the active 800 neapolitan sculptore
Francesco Biangardi.
The Rosario church, recently turned into a Sanctuary and built around the 1820,
presents a splendid opera by Francesco Jerace, a sculptore of the Madonna. San
Rocco’s church, which construction started in 1835, is the largest church
amongst the ones of the surrounding villages.
The municipal Villa remains the main attraction of Cittanova. Founded in 1880,
has numerous gardens with rare plants (ferns, sequoia,juniper of Virginia,maple-trees)
and is a real botanical garden.
Leaving Cittanova and following the 112 for 6km west and the turning for another
km going south, there is Taurianova (270mt a.s.l.), set at the feet of
the ridge that joins Aspromonte with the Serre. Walking through the streets of
the village and getting to the centra Piazza Italia, is possible to admire the
War Memorial realised by the Romeo in 1920 and the Rosario’s church, originally
connected to the Dominican convent founded in 1537. This church has a marble
medallion of precious making carrying the image of the Madonna delle Grazie,
attributed to the 500 sculpture Girolamo Santacroce (1502-1537). To mention also
the church of the Immacolata di Radicena with its statue of the Madonna del
Soccorso of the messinese sculptor Rinaldo Bonanno (XVI cent.) and the fragment
of a ciborium with bas-relief sculpted praying angels; San Giuseppe church and
Santi Apostoli Pietro and Paolo that keeps a gracious statue of the Beata
Vergine Maria of Jesu, anonimous opera of the XV-XVI cent. From Taurianova going
south 6km on the SS112 there is Terranova Sappo Minulio, small village,
framed by a thick olve trees landscape. The village is characterised by the long
Corso Roma and two squares: 24 Maggio and C.Battisti. In the first there is the
town hall, the municipal tower the war memorial and a tree oasis; in the second
(at the centre of the ancient part) there are some interesting historical
palaces, the main church and the clerical sanctuary. Not far from Terranova
Sappo Minulio is possibile to visit the medieval centre of Molochio. 5km
on from Terranova on the SS 112, direction south west, passing through Parapodio
and turning left on the SS111 after km east there is Oppido Mamertina
offers the chance to the tourist to choose different types of cultural routes.
The ghost city of Oppido Vecchia just a few km from the village is a fascinating
place remained untouched through time: among hoses in ruins stand out the
remains of a town door and the cloister and frontal of the convent , as well as
the ruins of the ancient cathedral and the castle of Angevin-Aragonese make. The
heart of oppido also offers the chance to admire ancient master palaces with
splendid stone portals. The magnificence of the Cathedral as well as the one of
the churches of San Leone and of Santa Caterina show the strong religious
feeling that the population has nurtured during the centuries. For who instead
loves the uncontaminated nature and breathtaking views is advised to go in to
the surrounding hills areas. Here between beech woods and spontaneous flowers,
will be possible to enjoy the view of the near Piana di Gioia Tauro.
