In the heart of the Mediterranean, between the sea
and the mountains, with a mild climate thanks to the sea, the
province territory is characterised by thick chestnut tree, beech,
holm oax and white fir tree forests, that alternate with olive and
grape groves, secular fiumare and overhanging coasts covered in
ferns, brooms, arbutus, myrtles, oleanders and prickly pears.
The coastline that goes from Villa S. Giovanni to Gioiosa Ionica
presents the natural habitat for bergamot cultivation. The
territory’s fauna presents different species of birds, and amongst
them we find the black woodpecker, the great eagle, the harrier
eagle and the pecchiaiolo hawk, also called adorno, that in
springtime crosses the Messina Strait from Africa to procreate in
Europe.
