25km from Reggio, on the SS184, that runs along the valley of the
Gallico Fiumara, there is Sant’Alessio d’Aspromonte, ancient
district of Calanna. To mention the Town Hall, the SS Annunziata
church, built in 1606, to substitute the one of Sant’Anna that was
destroyed by the Saracens that, in 1571, burnt the entire village;
the Romeo House of late 700 and headquarters of the Borboun.
Continuing on the SS184, direction Gambarie, there is a crossroad to
Podargoni, especially mentioned for the rural architecture of
its buildings former 1908. it’s worth to visit Santa Maria del Bosco
church, in via Alighiero, where a splendid marble statue
representing the Madonna with the Baby by the messinese sculpture
Bonanno in 1588 is kept.
Continuing along the road there is Santo Stefano d’Aspromonte,
touristic place with a truly naturalistic landscape. The cathedral
dedicated to S.Stefano Protomartire is worth to mention. Opened in
1777, in place of the most ancient Chiesa Madre, and totally
restored in 1954, presents a portal of valuable artistic importance,
a rose-window, a painting that represents the stoning of the saint
of the town, the Madonna del Carmine statue probably earlier than
1850 and the artistic windows lately realised with the worshippers
offers. Another monumental opera of great architectonic and
historical importance is the Monumental Asilo “G.Filastò”. in the
territory there also are the ruins of an ancient abbey of the
Basilean Order: S.Giovanni a Castaneto and the Grotta di San
Silvestro.
Through beautiful forests of pine, beech and fir trees, still
following the SS184 there is Gambarie (1330mt a.s.l.), the
most famous mountain place of the area and house to the National
Park of Aspromonte. With good skiing services, its tracks are full
with snow for many months per year and offer a unique view over the
Costa Viola and Sicily. In the autumn is rich with mushrooms and
chestnuts, and many festivals to taste typical products. Towards
S.Eufemia a brief turning will take to Cippo di Garibaldi, a place
where the hero of the two worlds was wounded on his leg, the Cippo
is inside a deep pine wood, where there is also a mausoleum that
keeps garibaldine objects and photos of the time.
From Gambarie is easy to get to Montalto, that with its
1956 mt. Is the highest top of the Aspromonte, where is possible to
admire the Redentore statue and the rose of the winds, and obviously
a heartbreaking view.
